Et effectivement, la série britannique n'ira pas plu loin. C'est la showrunneuse Charlie Covell qui a annoncé la mauvaise nouvelle en interview avec RadioTimes "Je pense que ce sera tout pour moi. Ouais, c'est fait. Je pense qu'essayer d'en savoir plus serait une erreur, j'aime l'endroit où nous l'avons laissée ... Si je n'avais pas pu faire de deuxième saison, j'aurais vraiment été dégoûtée. J'aime là où j'ai laissé la série, ça me semble rendre justice à l'histoire. Et, évidemment, on ne peut écrire ce que les gens attendent. Attention, il est conseillé d’avoir visionné l’intégralité de la saison 2 de The End of the F***ing World avant de poursuivre la lecture de cette analyse, qui contient des spoilers. Petite bombe sous haute influence pop, The End of the F***ing World est vite devenue cette chose aussi edgy que touchante qu’il fallait avoir vu fin 2017, et surtout début 2018, quand la série de Charlie Covell adaptée du roman graphique éponyme de Charles Forsman a débarqué au niveau international sur Netflix, après une première diffusion plus discrète sur Channel 4. Blasés, insensibles et paumés, Alyssa et James semblaient sortis d’un film de Quentin Tarantino. Ils se retrouvaient dépassés par leur fugue à la Bonnie and Clyde quand ils tombaient sur un authentique psychopathe. Cet hommage référencé La Balade sauvage, True Romance, Thelma et Louise… aux romances dingues du cinéma américain s’achevait sur un coup de feu, qui semblait peut-être atteindre James. Une fin romantique et tragique, aussi appréciée par les amateurs de fins ouvertes que considérée comme inaboutie par les fans de résolutions claires et nettes. Ces derniers auront donc été ravis d’apprendre que devant le succès international, The End of the F***ing World allait finalement revenir pour une saison 2. Je n’en faisais pas partie. Comment surpasser le climax de cette saison 1 parfaite, jouissive, à l’humour trash, aux scènes explosives ? La réponse de Charlie Covell est limpide il ne s’agit pas de surpasser les émotions qu’ont pu nous procurer la première saison, qui correspond à la crise d’ado d’Alyssa et James, mais d’explorer les conséquences de ce qui est arrivé aux deux reprend deux ans après les événements du dernier épisode. Et nos deux tourtereaux torturés en ont bien bavé, chacun de leur côté. James est bien vivant, mais on lui a aussi tiré dessus. Il a failli rester handicapé à vie. Après des années de rééducation et le soutien sans faille de son père, il est finalement à peu près guéri, du moins physiquement. Parce qu’entre-temps, son géniteur bienveillant est décédé sous ses yeux d’une crise cardiaque. Le jeune homme est donc orphelin, et se trimballe partout avec les cendres de son père sans trop savoir quoi en faire. Quand il reçoit dans une lettre une balle de revolver gravée de son prénom, James se doute qu’Alyssa a reçu la même. Paniqué pour elle ou cherchant une excuse de la revoir, il va la retrouver, dans la ville paumée où elle a élu domicile avec sa mère. Et surprise elle est sur le point… de se marier. Une troisième protagoniste fait également son entrée, dès le premier épisode. Il s’agit de Bonnie excellente Naomi Ackie, bien décidée à se venger de nos deux anti-héros pour la bonne ou foireuse raison qu’elle était amoureuse… de Clive. Ce twist-là nous est raconté dès le premier épisode. Il peut paraître improbable, et pourtant, il sert la grande thématique d’une deuxième saison placée sous le signe de la reconstruction. Jessica Barden est plus bouleversante que jamais dans les pompes d’une Alyssa traumatisée, qui ne sait pas comment gérer ce qu’elle a subi une tentative de viol par un psychopathe, puis son sauvetage sanglant par James, en légitime défense. Sans parler de traumas plus profonds comme la relation toxique qu’elle entretient avec sa mère, et un ex beau-père qui la harcelait sexuellement. Et de sa dernière déception en date elle s’est sentie abandonnée par James. Toute la saison est traversée par ses yeux tristes, sa douleur et sa peine. C’est qu’on assiste à la très difficile période de reconstruction après un traumatisme Alyssa tente de sortir la tête de l’eau, parfois maladroitement en demandant un homme gentil en mariage par exemple, alors qu’elle ne le veut pas vraiment mais elle est constamment ramenée, piégée par sa psyché dans cette chambre où Clive l’a agressée. D’où la quantité de flash-back qui émaillent ces huit épisodes, sous forme de flashs subliminaux. Il y en a beaucoup, mais ils servent à nous faire comprendre dans quel état d’esprit se trouve Alyssa. Dans The End of the F***ing World, rien ne se passe comme prévu, et les personnages sont constamment confrontés à l’ironie de la vie. Depuis des années, Bonnie rêve de venger la mort du seul être qu’elle a aimé, et c’est un autre homme qu’elle tuera, par accident. Son fantasme de revanche s’évapore alors qu’elle comprend qui était réellement la personne qu’elle pensait aimer. “Je fais quoi de toute cette douleur ?” demande-t-elle, en sanglots. “Je ne sais pas” “I don’t know”, répond Alyssa, dont la réplique fétiche depuis le début de la série est le contraire, “Je sais” “I know”. De son côté, James aussi a une réponse toute faite et particulièrement ironique “Ok.” Il le dit de nombreuses fois dans cette saison qu’il passe agrippé à l’urne contenant les cendres de son père. Évidemment, James Alex Lawther, au diapason d’un casting parfait n’est pas ok du tout. Le jeune homme taiseux, qui pensait être un psychopathe parce qu’il a du mal à exprimer ses émotions et à être touché par son prochain alors qu’il l’est en vérité, il suffit de voir son comportement bienveillant avec Bonnie et la peur qui s’empare de lui à l’idée qu’Alyssa ne soit plus de ce monde, va devoir se résoudre à communiquer ses sentiments. Lui aussi, désormais orphelin, emprunte le chemin de la guérison, qui passe par regarder en face le suicide de sa mère et la mort brutale de son père. Sans compter le fait d’avoir pris la vie d’un être humain, aussi mauvais était-il. En creusant au fond des traumatismes et du désespoir, cette deuxième saison de The End of the F***ing World, rythmée par de nouvelles compositions folk de Graham Coxon de Blur, touche en plein cœur. Si elle perd au passage un peu du fun de la première saison, la série ne se départie jamais de l’humour noir et de scènes décalées comme ce policier qui débarque dans le dîner d’Alyssa, ne comprend rien de ce qui se trame, et prend tout son temps… qui font son le cynisme apparent et les attitudes blasées des uns et des autres se cachent des personnages en manque d’amour ou incapables de le partager sainement. Et puis Alyssa, Bonnie et James doivent tous faire leur deuil. Littéralement pour les deux derniers, qui sont “ceux qui restent” après la perte d’une personne aimée. Pour la première, il s’agit davantage d’un deuil métaphorique, celui de la jeune femme qu’elle était avant ce drame, qui lui a pris une partie d’elle-même. Et malgré la tristesse qui traverse cette saison, qui pourrait être la dernière Charlie Covell ne souhaite pas de saison 3, elle s’achève sur une lueur d’espoir. Parce que sous les “fuck off”, les décisions douteuses et les giclées de sang, The End of the F***ing World est une des histoires d’amour les plus touchantes vues récemment sur un écran.

First up, season three needs that all-important green as much as we're hopeful for a third season, it looks like there really is basically no chance. Covell's attitude to the story's season two conclusion seems pretty conclusive. "I think, for me, that's it now," Covell said in 2019 via RadioTimes. Yeah, that's done. I think to try and eke more out would be wrong, I like where we've left it.""Put it this way, if for some reason we hadn't been allowed to do season two, I would have been really gutted. Which I think shows that it was the right thing to do – for me, anyway. And I think I like where we end it [in season two], and yeah, it feels right for the story."Okay, yeah, that sounds fairly final, but there is still some slim hope. "But you never know, and you obviously you can't write for what people want," she added. "I think you have to work out what's right for the characters and the story – I sound like such a dick saying that but I think you can't, you're not doing fan fiction."Sadly, fan fiction, and fan trailers, are probably all we can expect for the time being. But we're still keeping our fingers crossed that it's not quite the end of the f**king world, and that the Boyhood concept comes to fruition.
